The investigation

The book asks whether an asteroid exploding in the Earth’s upper atmosphere can trigger enormous atmospheric pollution, extreme weather patterns and shifts in terrestrial seismicity without leaving an impact crater.

It considers astronomical evidence that, since about 1990, the Earth entered a region of space containing a greater number of rocks and debris than at any time in the previous fourteen to fifteen centuries.

Costa brings religious and mythological texts into dialogue with modern methods including dendrochronology, ice cores, ice rafting, sedimentology, volcanology and astronomical retro-calculations.
